he social and emotional development of young black teenage girls can no longer wait. That is why this study/discussion guide was created. The truth for young black teenage girls is:
  • We learn how to love from our fathers
  • We learn how to be loved from our fathers
  • Our fathers are the standard by which we judge all men
  • If our fathers aren't there, we fill his void with every Tyrone, Jamal, and Derrick

The Reflection/Resolve Study and Discussion Guide is an interactive reading/writing exercise that challenges young girls to look inward and make better choices about relationships, female aggression and academic achievement. Educational Reviews for My Soul to His Spirit:

"With my Youth Guidance/21st Century Community Learning Center program, many of the girls not only identified with several of the stories in the book, but were eager to share their own stories as well. Additionally, the very provocative study guide lends itself to in-depth discussions. Helping black girls and women understand or at least dialogue about the residual impact that our fathers' have in our lives is a very powerful healing tool."

William Rainey
Harper High School

"My Soul to His Spirit is so important, because most of these women are not professional writers, yet they have found a way to make their voices heard. Thus, in addition to including Toni Morrison, belle hooks and Maya Angelou on the college syllabus, including the stories of these women helps all of us who are not famous realize how important our stories are too."

Dr. Michelle H. Martin
English Department, Clemson University

"My Soul to His Spirit assisted students in reaching some of those dark areas they never would have reached. Reading the book and dealing with their relationships with their parents--mother or father--is an important step in the healing process and in moving to define yourself."

Dr. LaVerne Gyant
Director, Center for Black Studies, Northern Illinois University
